Objective:

The client directed us to create a Business Intelligence (BI) roadmap for the future, facilitating self-service BI solutions for its users. The primary objective was to design and implement a next-generation BI solution for finance, enabling support for operational requirements while establishing a robust, competent, and versatile foundation for accommodating future requirements effortlessly.

Challenges

The reporting environment curated on traditional data warehouses and SQL Server Reporting Services presented several performance/operational constraints for the client. Some of these are listed below: The client’s existing reporting environment, built on a traditional data warehouse and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), presented several limitations:

• Lack of interactivity in reports. Poor interactivity in reports.
• Slow response times for queries and reports.
• Absence of ad-hoc reporting capabilities.
• Prolonged development time for creating new reports. Lengthy cycles of new report creation/Lengthy new report creation cycle.
• The need to extract data from multiple queries instead of implementing a single data model.

These issues compromised their ability to leverage data effectively, delaying the decision-making process and the comprehension and implementation of operational improvements.

Solution Overview

Our Team has curated and implemented a contemporary BI solution by capitalizing on Microsoft Azure technologies. The solution proposed:

• Azure Fabric Analytics for progressed data integration and processing.
• Azure Purview for data governance and cataloguing.
• Azure Data Lake for scalable data storage.
• Azure Dedicated SQL Pools for high-performance querying.
• Power BI for interactive data visualization and analytics.

The periodic data exportation from varied sources was executed Data from various sources was exported periodically using Change Data Capture (CDC) into a staging area with parquet files. Furthermore, using the Azure Data Factory, data was transferred into staging tables in Azure Data Lake and then/ subsequently loaded into the data warehouse. For further enhancements in analytics, the team of our adept business analysts utilized the Power BI tool, supported by a semantic model fostering streamlined reporting.
